Because clothing was seen as too utilitarian of an aspect when the legal boundaries of intellectual property was being forged, there is no intellectual property rules for fashion.

The challenge was fundamentally this: the fashion world has not only survived, it has and will continue to dilate — can the digital industry (video games, music, film, photography, etc.)?

Just so we’re on the same page, let’s make sure we know what intellectual property is. Dictionary.com defines the phrase as “property that results from original creative thought, as patents, copyright material, and trademarks.” (For a more indepth definition click here)Essentially it means anything that you create is covered by intellectual property. Therefore just because someone found a picture off Google images, doesn’t mean they can’t manipulate it however they want. Just because someone found an instrumental track of a song, they can just add new lyrics to it and make their own track.

At first thought, the digital world without intellectual property, looked like the wild, wild west. Probably with more Helvetica (bold) and drop shadows in exchange for whore houses and shoot outs at dawn.

In my opinion, the first casualty would be film. Right away. They wouldn’t last one screening on a silver screen. More likely, the premiere would be split up into 20 parts on YouTube. I think video games and music would go out around the same time. The world would be over run by indie games that take 20 minutes to finish. Music fans would have to settle for $400 for nosebleed seats at a Vampire Weekend concert.

This would be the world for the first few years, as I see it. Maybe. But maybe digital artists would be pinching pennies together at this juncture simply because the methods used to promote a musician, a film or even a video game not 5 years ago would be simply irrelevant in this world. One could even argue irrelevant in this one world as well. Case in point Timothy Chantarangsu aka Traphik as more followers on Youtube than platinum recording artist Soldier Boy.

I like to think I believe in the viewing public. Even though the best video games or the best songs would be able to be duplicated over and over in its entirety, I believe the view public will still have standards. I believe the buying public won’t buy in terms of quality every single time but people are smart enough to want good art, digital or not, to prosper. I believe the originators will stand apart from the imitators. Either that or the Adobe empire would crumble and visual artists would resort to strictly painting all over again.

What if the rules changed for real? What if tomorrow one can simply take whatever they saw and claim it as original work? Would you sink or swim? Without ownership, is there any motivation to innovate?

My favourite quote is “An idea that is developed and put into action is more important than an idea that exists only as an idea.” — by Henry Ford.

I love New Media because I love ideas.

I love New Media because it means not having to do the same thing everyday. Today can be putting together the opening credits for a film. Tomorrow can be brainstorming for a branding strategy. The next day can be talking about a billboard.

Although young, it is apparent to me that thinking inside the box is a certain path to mediocrity. It is unrealistic to flip a switch and turn on a light. It is unrealistic to combine metal and physics homework and then be able to fly. It is unrealistic thinking that is the base of any idea worth existing.

Again, my name is Jeffrey Britanico. Let me know if you’re interested in, or have an idea out of the ordinary.
